Flat Tire Emergency? Tire One Auto Center's Guide to Safety

A flat tire can be a stressful experience, especially if it happens on a busy road or in an unfamiliar area. Tire One Auto Center in Grand Forks, ND, is here to provide a step-by-step guide to safely changing your tire and getting back on the road.

Safety First!

Before you start changing your tire, ensure your safety. Pull over to a safe location away from traffic, preferably on a level surface. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.

What You'll Need

  • Spare tire (inflated)
  • Jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Owner's manual
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Wheel chocks

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Engage the Parking Brake: Make sure the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Apply Wheel Chocks: Place wheel chocks behind the wheels opposite the flat tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
  3. Loosen the Lug Nuts: Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Turn them counterclockwise. Don't remove them completely, just loosen them.
  4. Position the Jack: Consult your owner's manual to find the correct jacking points on your vehicle's frame. Place the jack securely and raise the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground.
  5. Remove the Lug Nuts: Now, fully remove the lug nuts and set them aside in a safe place.
  6. Remove the Flat Tire: Carefully pull the flat tire off the hub.
  7. Mount the Spare Tire: Align the spare tire with the wheel studs and push it onto the hub.
  8. Install the Lug Nuts: Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern (opposite nuts) to ensure even pressure.
  9. Lower the Vehicle: Slowly lower the vehicle until the spare tire touches the ground, but the full weight of the car isn't on it.
  10. Tighten the Lug Nuts: Use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  11. Lower the Vehicle Completely: Lower the vehicle completely to the ground.
  12. Final Tightening: Give the lug nuts one last tightening.
  13. Stow the Flat Tire and Tools: Place the flat tire and tools back in their designated storage locations.
